El Twente no sabe perder

El primer título que celebró el Sevilla en la era moderna fue la UEFA de la temporada 2005-2006. Fue un partidazo que acabó 4-0. Su rival fue un sorprendente Middlesbrough. Un equipo con muy pocas alegrías para estar fundado en 1876 y que nunca había llegado a una final europea.

Para el Boro, pese a todo, la final se consideró un gran éxito y el mérito se lo llevó Steve McClaren. Para él, el Middlesbrough fue su primera experiencia como máximo jefe de un banquillo (hasta entonces siempre había sido segundo entrenador) y sus cinco temporadas las culminó con ese subcampeonato de la UEFA, además de dar al club en la temporada 2002-2003 el único título de su historia: una Copa de la Liga.

El motivo de irse, fue que le ofrecieron, y aceptó, ser seleccionador de Inglaterra. Casi nada. Su fútbol en la selección quedó tapado y se vio afectado por la polémica de ser el primer seleccionador que decidió no convocar a Beckham. No clasificó a Inglaterra para la Eurocopa de 2008 tras la inolvidable derrota la última jornada en casa contra Croacia (2-3). Destitución automática.

Y destierro. No clasificar a Inglaterra para una Eurocopa es algo que marca. Y los trabajos después de eso no llueven, por lo menos, no para la Premier. Así que el bueno de Steve tuvo que cruzar el canal de la Mancha e irse al Twente. Empezó dubitativo pero acabó la Liga segundo y en la UEFA pasó la Liguilla en un grupo difícil (Manchester City, PSG, Racing y Schalke 04) y en la siguiente ronda el Olympique de Marsella lo echó por penaltis. Una gran temporada para un equipo como el Twente. Curiosamente, al mismo tiempo, el Middlesbrough bajaba a la Championship (segunda división inglesa). Paradojas de la vida.

¿Cómo superar eso en la siguiente temporada? Pues no perdiendo. Líder de la Eredivisie con 10 partidos ganados y 2 empatados. Pero además en Europa tampoco le tiembla el pulso: de la previa de la Champions League le eliminó el Sporting de Portugal por el valor doble de los goles en campo contrario. Y en la Europa League sólo ha perdido un partido de seis jugados. Su única derrota en toda la temporada ha sido contra el Sheriff. Enhorabuena al entrenador.

¿A quién destacar de los jugadores? Pues a Miroslav Stoch, delantero, eslovaco, 20 años. Bajito y muy veloz. Maneja las dos piernas. Irá al Mundial con Eslovaquia. Tiene pinta de poder llegar lejos… por algo es propiedad del Chelsea y ya debutó unos minutos el año pasado en la Premier. El Twente es una estación de paso y ya ha metido 6 goles este año.
